1. ¿Cuál es tu nombre completo y cuándo y dónde naciste?

1. What is your full name and when and where were you born?

Michael Deane Wrona. Nacido en 1966 en Brisbane, la tercera más grande ciudad de Australia y capital del noreste del estado de Queensland.

2. ¿Cómo entraste en el hipismo?

2. How did you get into the sport of horse racing?

Yo me interesé en mi primera adolescencia. El hipismo es una corriente, el deporte popular en Australia con una cobertura media extensiva. Me encanta escuchar en vivo una carrera de caballos por radio. Por ese tiempo, mi abuelo me dio un juego de mesa con caballos de plástico, dado y dinero de juguete. Se puso emocionante abandonando las reglas y colocándole nombres a los caballos (los cuales todavía recuerdo) mientras los movía lanzando el dado. Luego, progresé haciéndole los colores a la camisa de los jockeys con papel los cuales puse en las paredes de mi cuarto mientras narraba las carreras en un grabador de cassetes. Siempre estuve atraído en ser un narrador antes de ver una carrera en vivo.    

I became interested in my early teens. Horse racing is a mainstream, popular sport in Australia with extensive media coverage. I loved listening to race calls live on radio from around the country. About that time, my grandfather gave me a horse racing board game with plastic horses, dice and play money. I derived the most enjoyment from abandoning the rules and calling out the names of the horses (which I still remember) as I moved them to the roll of the dice. I progressed to drawing the silks/colors of real racehorses on small pieces of paper, which I would push across my bedroom floor while calling imaginary races into a tape recorder. I was hooked on being a race caller before I ever saw a race live.

3. ¿Dónde y cuándo narraste tu primera carrera?

3. Where and when did you call your first race?

Mi primera carrera en un sistema público fue en una pequeña pista llamada Kilcoy, a 90 minutos de Brisbane, en 1983.Yo tenía 17 años y para el momento tenía dos años de práctica en cabinas o tribunas de varias pistas. Mi primera narración completa sucedió unos meses después, en un gigante rancho de ganado en Australia llamado Brunette Down. Ellos celebraban dos días de carreras de caballos anualmente en un fin de semana de fiesta. Las personas fueron a Brunette Down por cientos de miles e hicieron campamentos. Una de las etapas de mi viaje fue en un avión de tres puestos. Había un corredor de apuestas parado sobre un tambor de 44 galones. ¡Nunca olvidaré mis humildes orígenes!

My first call on a Public Address system was at a small track named Kilcoy, 90 minutes’ drive from Brisbane, in 1983. I was 17 and, by that time, had been practicing for a couple of years in spare booths or in grandstands at various tracks. My first full card happenend a few months later, at a giant cattle ranch in the Australian Outback named Brunette Downs. They held two days of horse racing annually, on a holiday weekend. People converged on Brunette Downs from hundreds of miles around, and set up campsites. One leg of my journey was in a three-seat plane. There was a solitary bookmaker, standing atop a 44-gallon drum. I have never forgotten my very humble beginnings!

4. Who was the most influential person in your career?

De todos los narradores que yo escuché en la radio a quién yo quería emular era Johnny Tapp. Él era el narrador líder en Sydney y yo lo he adorado hasta ahora. Varios narradores en Brisbane me dieron críticas constructivas, ánimo y oportunidades. Sin embargo, John Tapp fue mi ídolo y llegó a ser una gran influencia para mí -porque la oportunidad de venir a Los Estados Unidos vino a través de él- A John se le ofreció el trabajo en Hollywood Park en 1990, pero él declinó. Cuando se le pidió que recomendara a alguien John me dijo. Al poco tiempo conocí a mi ídolo en el aeropuerto de Sydney y me senté al lado de él en un jet Jumbo rumbo a California.     

Of all the race callers I heard on the radio and wanted to emulate, my biggest inspiration was Johnny Tapp. He was the leading caller in Sydney and I worshipped him from afar. Several callers in Brisbane gave me invaluable critiquing, encouragment and opportunities. However, John Tapp was my idol and became my biggest influence – because the chance to come to the U.S. arose through him! John was offered the job at Hollywood Park in 1990, but declined except to bring his family on a working vacation. When asked to recommend someone to accompany him with a view to continuing fulltime, John “tapped” me! A short time later, I met my idol at Sydney Airport and sat next to him on a jumbo jet bound for California.

5. ¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas de narrar y qué es lo más difícil?

5. What do you enjoy most about calling a race and what is the most difficult?

Yo aprecio los momentos cuando salgo perfectamente victorioso de una situación difícil, e.g. teniendo sedas similares en una pista repleta, y sabiendo cual caballo es cual de un vistazo de bridas de colores diferentes, bozales o gríngolas. Esto me da más satisfacción que unos versos inteligentes, ingeniosos o memorables.    

I appreciate the moments when I seamlessly overcome a tricky situation, e.g. having similar silks in a bunched field, and knowing which horse is which - just from a glimpse of a different colored bridle, nose roll or blinkers. That gives me more satisfaction than delivering clever, witty or memorable lines.

Supongo que la respuesta es inversa de la parte dos de la pregunta. Para alguien con la habilidad (¿don?) para rápidamente memorizar nombres y colores, realmente la más grande dificultad es ver suficientemente aquellos colores en carreras. Aparte de grupos similares de sedas o pistas completos, el clima puede ser un impedimento (la visión es tan traicionera como la lluvia o nieve). También, algunas cabinas dan al anunciador una perspectiva peculiar o un ángulo engañoso en la llegada. Además, hay una gran variedad de distracciones a las cuales hay que derrotar, e.g. problemas con los equipos, interrupciones de visitantes o teléfonos incluso temas personales que pueden afectar tu enfoque. Un viejo refrán que reza: “El show debe continuar”      

I suppose the converse answers Part Two of the question. For someone with the ability (gift?) to rapidly memorize names and colors, the greatest difficulty is actually seeing enough of those colors in-running. Apart from similar sets of silks and bunched fields, weather can be an impediment (glare is just as treacherous as rain or snow). Also, some booths give the announcer a peculiar perspective or have a deceptive angle at the finish. Furthermore, there is a great variety of distractions to overcome, e.g. equipment issues, phone or visitor interruptions, or even personal issues which can affect one’s focus. An old saying rings true: “the show must go on!”

6. ¿Cuál ha sido tu caballo favorito en una carrera que hayas narrado y la mejor carrera que tu hayas narrado?

6. Who is your favorite horse you have called and the best race you have called?

Mi caballo favorito es Kingston Town, un jet negro súper estrella del hipismo australiano en mis años de formación. Esta combinación de Johnny Tapp narrando a Kingston Town fue un catalizador en mis inicios de fanático en el deporte y ¡aspirante a narrador! Mi caballo americano preferido es Cigar, por todas las pistas que éste visitó y porque tuve que narrar su victoria consecutiva número 16 cuando igualó el record de Citation (en Arlington 1996). La carrera fue televisada en vivo a nivel nacional por CBS. Por décadas, la mejor carrera que yo he narrado sería la Copa de Oro Hollywood de 1990 en la cual reinó Sunday Silence, sin embargo, la Breeder´s Cup Distaff pudiera estar al tope. Beholder y Songbird captaron la atención mundial en Santa Anita ese día. Yo narré la carrera para la parte pública y la audiencia del simulcast internacional.   

My favorite horse is Kingston Town, a jet-black superstar of Australian racing in my formative years. The combination of Johnny Tapp calling Kingston Town was a catalyst in my becoming a fan of the sport and an aspiring announcer! My favorite American horse is Cigar, because of how many tracks he visited and because I got to call his 16th consecutive win when he equalled Citation’s record (Arlington, 1996). It was pre-TVG, and the race was televised live nationwide on CBS. For decades, the best race I’ve called would have been the 1990 Hollywood Gold Cup, in which reigning Horse of the Year Sunday Silence and future HOTY Criminal Type battled thoughout the final 3/8 of a mile… However, the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Distaff might have topped it! Beholder and Songbird had the racing world riveted at Santa Anita that day. I called the race on the Public Address and for the international simulcast audience.

7. Si pudieras cambiar algo de las carreras de caballos ¿Qué sería?

7. If there is anything you could change about horse racing, what would it be?

¿En las carreras americanas? Dos cosas: el cabio del dividendo después de que las carreras comienzan (se necesitan dividendos fijos); y transparencia. Los fanáticos americanos se mantienen en la obscuridad como hongos comparado con la información la cual está fácilmente disponible por los comisarios en Australia o en Hong Kong.

In U.S. Racing? Two things: odds changing after races start (fixed odds wagering is desperately needed); and transparency. American fans are kept in the dark like mushrooms, compared to the information that is made readily available by stewards in countries such as Australia and Hong Kong.

8. ¿Algo que sorprendería a la gente de ti?

8. What is something that would surprise people about you?

Yo solía narrar y poseer ¡galgos! Todos los narradores australianos ganan experiencia en carreras de arneses y carreras de galgos. La pasé bien siendo dueños de talentosos galgos –incluyendo uno de los mejores galgos in Queesland, Minerva Reef. A pesar de haber desaparecido en Los Estados Unidos, en Australia, las carreras de galgos permanecen popular. A propósito, se les exige a los narradores nombrar a cada galgo por su nombre y no por su número.    

I used to announce and own greyhounds! All Australian race callers gain experience in harness and greyhound racing, and I was in two different ownership groups that had fun with some talented dogs – including one of the top distance greyhounds in Queensland, Minerva Reef. Despite having disappeared in the U.S., greyhound racing remains popular in Australia. By the way, the race callers are required to mention every dog in the race by name, not number!

9. ¿Cuál es tu hobby, deporte, comida, lugar, película, música, bebida, libro y profesor preferido?

9. What is your favorite: hobby, sport, food, place, movie, music, drink, book and teacher?

Un día libre perfecto envolvería una excursión con una visita a cerveza artesanal (yo también amo catar vino). Yo soy afortunado en vivir cercano al océano por eso también disfruto caminar en la playa. Soy un gran fanático del futbol europeo y disfruto ver el tenis. Me gusta una gran variedad de comida, incluyendo algo envuelto en pastel, e.g. pasteles de carnes y empanadas. A pesar de tener 32 años en Los Estados Unidos, me disgusta los condimentos americanos tales como mayonesa, encurtidos, aderezos y mostaza amarilla, por eso pedir sándwiches y hamburguesas pueden ser una experiencia horrorosa, prefiero películas de trama dramática. Yo disfruto novelas (una reciente favorita es Un Caballero en Moscú por Amor Tovles) y de No Ficción (incluyendo muchos libros de Eric Larsson). Mi ciudad favorita en los Estados Unidos es New Orleans. Yo anuncié tres temporadas en Fair Grounds a inicios de los 2000 y he regresado a NOLA muchas veces. Me gusta la vibra, la comida, los locales de Jazz. Paisajísticamente, adoro el Lago Tahoe el cual es el lugar favorito para escaparnos mi esposa y yo. Y naturalmente deseo visitar a mi familia y viejos amigos en Australia. Mi profesor preferido se llamaba Mr. Lamont (Inglés en bachillerato, amo las palabras). Profesionalmente, la influencia de John Tapp es insuperable y me gustaría pensar que cada día contiene momentos de enseñanza.  

A perfect day off would involve a hike followed by a visit to a craft brewery (I also love wine tasting). I’m fortunate to live close to the ocean, so I also enjoy walks on the beach. I’m a big fan of European soccer and enjoy watching tennis. I like a huge variety of food, including anything wrapped in pastry, e.g. meat pies and empanadas. Despite living 32 years in the U.S., I dislike most American condiments such as mayonnaise, pickles, ranch dressing and that “canary” yellow mustard. So, ordering sandwiches and burgers can be an ordeal! I prefer dramatic, plot-driven movies. I enjoy novels (a recent favorite is A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Tovles) and “narrative non-fiction” (including many books by Erik Larson). My favorite U.S. city is New Orleans. I announced three seasons at Fair Grounds in the early 2000s, and have returned to “NOLA” many times since. I love the vibe, the food and the jazz clubs. Scenically, I adore Lake Tahoe, which is a favorite getaway place for my wife and me. And, naturally, I look forward to visits with my family and old friends in Australia. My favorite teacher was named Mr. Lamont (high school English… I love words). Professionally, John Tapp’s influence is unsurpassable. And, I like to think that every day contains teachable moments.

He tenido algunas experiencias terribles de perder trabajos por cierres de pistas y también he sido bendecido por haber disfrutado muchas oportunidades maravillosas e importantes. Estoy orgulloso de haber perseverado, y espero narrar muchos más ganadores para los fanáticos cuyo apoyo valoro y aprecio.   

I have had some terrible experiences of losing jobs through tracks closing and am also blessed to have enjoyed many wonderful opportunities and highlights. I’m proud that I’ve persevered, and I hope to call plenty more winners for the fans whose support I value and appreciate!
