How did you get into the sport of horse

mom and dad used to take me to Hollywood Park and Santa Anita as a
kid. | ||

I
called my first race at Hollywood Park on December 24, 1992 as a guest
announcer. I called two races, imitating Trevor Denman in one race and a
combination of Harry Henson, Alan Buchdahl and
Trevor Denman in the other. |

Who was the most influential person in your career?

My
career was inspired by the brilliance of Trevor Denman, who came to the
United States in 1983 and took over as track announcer at Santa Anita
Park. He changed the profession dramatically with his style of describing
the action and the way he shared his love of the game with fans via his
racecalls as well as his commentary on the
nightly replay show and in interviews. |

sido inspirada en la brillantez de Trevor Denman, quien llegó a Los Estados Unidos en 1983 y
trabajó como anunciador de pista en Santa Anita Park. Él cambió la
narración hípica radicalmente con su estilo al describir una carrera de
caballos y la forma en la cual compartió su amor con los fanáticos con sus
narraciones y comentarios en sus programas nocturnos y de
entrevistas. | ||

What do you enjoy most about calling a race and what is the most
difficult? | ||

|
It
is a fun and fulfilling job because calling a race presents a challenge to
quickly identify what’s going on. I enjoy trying to “solve the puzzle” as to what’s
going to happen during the race. From some announcer’s booths, it is
difficult to see certain parts of the race because of trees, or other
obstructions. That’s part of what comes with the job, so it was important
for me to learn how to deal with those challenges early in my career to
prepare me for new opportunities. | ||

muy alegre y llena bastante porque narrar una carrera presenta un reto de
identificación rápida de lo que sucede. Yo disfruto mucho tratando de “resolver el rompecabezas” de lo
que pasa durante la carrera. Desde algunas casetas de los anunciadores es
difícil ver ciertas partes de la carrera por los árboles u otros
obstáculos. | ||

Eso es parte de
lo que trae este trabajo, por eso para mí lo importante es cómo tratar con
estos retos los cuales de forma temprana me prepararon para nuevas
oportunidades en mi carrera. | ||

Who is your favorite horse you have called and the best race you have
called? | ||
|

caballo favorito en una carrera que tu hayas narrado y tu mejor carrera
narrada? | ||
|

|
It
would have to be American Pharoah. I had the
privilege of calling him three times (in the Rebel and Arkansas Derby at
Oaklawn and then in the Haskell at Monmouth
Park). Additionally, I got to watch him with the owner and trainer at
Churchill Downs and was also present when he won the Breeders’ Cup Classic
at Keeneland. My best race call was American
Pharoah’s Arkansas Derby
win. | ||

de American Pharoah. Yo tuve el privilegio de
narrar sus victorias en tres oportunidades (en el Rebel
y el Arkansas Derby en Oaklawn y luego en el
Haskell en Monmouth Park). Adicionalmente,
lo observé con su dueño y entrenador en Churchill Downs y también estuve presente cuando ganó la Breeders’ Cup Classic en
Keenland. Mi mejor narración fue la victoria de
American Pharoah en el Arkansas Derby.

If there is anything you could change about horse racing, what would it
be? | ||
|

|
I
would do more for the casual fan, making sure they could have affordable
access to the big events and maybe get a better price on tickets because
they are loyal to the sport year-round. I think this is true for all
sports including baseball, basketball and
football. |

el fanático humilde y sencillo, asegurándole un acceso cómodo a los
grandes eventos y quizás darle un mejor precio en sus tickets porque ellos
son leales todo el año. Yo creo que ese es el deber ser para todos los
deportes incluyendo el béisbol, basketbol y
fútbol. | ||

I
am a vegetarian, and, don’t eat meat, chicken, or
fish. | ||

What is your favorite: hobby, sport, food, drink, place, movie, music,
book and teacher? | ||

hobby, deporte, comida, bebida, lugar, música, libro y profesor
favorito? | ||

|
My
favorite hobby has always been enjoying horse racing, so I’m very lucky to
have these jobs calling races. My favorite sport is baseball. My favorite
food is pizza. Favorite drink is a tie between fresh squeezed Orange juice
and lemonade! I can’t pinpoint one category or band for music – I enjoy a
very wide variety but mostly tune into 80’s music. My favorite book is “Betting on Myself” by Steven
Crist, a brilliant writer and longtime Publisher of Daily Racing Form. I
guess my favorite teacher, after much thought, was Ms. Yano in 4th grade
at Beverly Vista. |

Mi hobby favorito
ha sido siempre disfrutar de las carreras de caballos, por eso me siento
muy dichoso de tener como trabajo la narración de carreras de caballos. Mi
deporte favorito es el béisbol. Mi comida favorita es la pizza. Mi bebida
favorita es un empate entre un fresco jugo de naranja recién exprimido y
una limonada. No puedo señalar una banda o una categoría en la música pues
disfruto de una gran variedad, pero mayormente escucho música de los 80.
Mi libro favorito es “Apostando a
Mí Mismo” de Steven Crist, un escritor
brillante y quien escribiera por mucho tiempo en el Daily Racing Form. Creo que
mi profesor favorito, después de mucho pensar es la Señora Yano de 4to Grado en Beverly Vista. | ||
